If you have a tier 5 pickaxe, don’t go gather tier 7 nodes – it will just hinder your progress. The only reason for you to be gathering higher-tier nodes is if you are collecting resources to craft your next-tier tool.

We don't really have any other stats except for what comes from the gear we wear, so no matter how strong you may be in your regular outfit, when you put on the gathering gear that all goes away.
