The ANalysis Of SIMilarity (ANOSIM) test has some similarity to an ANOVA-like hypothesis test, however, it is used to evaluate a dissimilarity matrix rather than raw data (Clarke, 1993). Further, raw (dis)similarities are often ranked prior to performing an ANOSIM. Ranking dissimilarities aligns ANOSIM to the non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) procedure.

TL;DR: In today’s blog post we discuss Representational Similarity Analysis (RSA), how it might improve our understanding of the brain as well as recent efforts by Samy Bengio’s and Geoffrey Hinton’s group to systematically study representations in Deep Learning architectures. So let’s get started!

Analysis of Similarity Statistics indicates that our pre-analysis assignment to habitat types (mesic sand prairie, old field, oak barrens, oak woodland) are meaningful for both plants and moths, and samples within groups are more similar in composition than samples from different groups (plant species presence P = 0.006, moth species presence P ...

24.11.2008 · Analysis of similarity structure has a history in psychology and related fields. When exposed to a suitable sensory stimulus, our brain activity reflects many properties of the stimulus. The reflection of a stimulus property in the activity level of a neuron constitutes what has been termed a first-order isomorphism between the property and its representation in the brain.
Analysis of similarities - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analysis_of_similarities
Analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) is a non-parametric statistical test widely used in the field of ecology. The test was first suggested by K. R. Clarke as an ANOVA-like test, where instead of operating on raw data, operates on a ranked dissimilarity matrix. Given a matrix of rank dissimilarities between a set of samples, each solely belong to one treatment group, the ANOSIM tests whether we can reject the null hypothesisthat the similarity b…

An introduction to Bayesian data analysis for Cognitive Science. The prior predictive distribution in Figure 3.5 shows prior data sets that are not realistic: Besides the fact that the data sets show that response times distributions are symmetrical–and we know that they are generally right-skewed–some data sets present response times that are unrealistically long.
