From what I've read, Ukrainian and Russian are "around 60%" mutually intelligible, which means about 60% of the words are similar or identical. The alphabet is also reasonably close, though there's differences ("g" is Г in RU but Ґ (notice the tip) in UA, also І and Ї are UA only), and the keyboard layouts differ in only a few keys.
