Been using Linux on and off since 2007, and this year I ditched Windows for good. After using Arch for a good while, I got tired of either solving issues or just being nervous for something breaking. With up to five updates a day or huge updates every week, I realized I used way too much time on my computer, and didn't get time for real life.
For LAN, it's damn hard to beat NoMachine. It does actual video encoding (VP9 by default) and thus only has to send whatever parts of the screen update (similar to VNC but finer grained).

If your just after a remote desktop server/client for your Linux workstation x2go is a very good option as x2go tunnels all network traffic over ssh. x2go also has clients for non Linux oses. vnc servers have become largely obsolete tech.
