This paper considers the impact on crop productivity of an enhanced understanding and subsequent manipulation of plant drought stress biochemistry and physiology. Emphasis is placed on possible exploitation of our recent increase in understanding of long-distance chemical signalling in plants, particularly in relation to soil drying.
From a crop production perspective, PGRs are used to maximize productivity and quality, improve consistency in production, and overcome genetic and abiotic limitations to plant productivity. There are five major classes of natural plant hormones.
