Denne lille strihårede jaktterrieren er opprinnelig fra grensen mellom England og Skottland - The border county. Derav også navnet border terrier. Rasen ble avlet fram som ren jaktterrier til revejakt, og er derfor utholdende og rask. Den var i tillegg en høyt verdsatt skadedyrbekjemper som holdt gårdene fri fra blant annet rotter.

Border terrieren er ennå hovedsakelig en hihund, både av utseende og temperament.
