From my Astaro protected network, I cannot telnet on port 25 to mail.problemdomain.com and I get a "connect failed" message. When I go to our backup internet connection, or from my home connection, I can telnet and connect to this domain.

2 Answers Active Oldest Votes 3 There are quite a few reasons for this. It may be that port 25 is being blocked by your VPS provider. Many will require that you specifically ask that it be opened, to help cut down on spam. Also, your firewall might be blocking port 25 inbound traffic. Get rid of that.

If you're trying to telnet to external servers or network IP's, be sure that the router or your provider does not block port 25. Here, the Dutch ISP KPN blocks port 25 which will make your requests go into /dev/null (hence the timeout). Can you try telnet to that port (25) to any known websites that are listening on that port. Also, if you have a local mail Server running on that port, you can try telnet localhost 25 and eliminate other issues. If you couldn't telnet any other websites on that port and telnet localhost works then firewall might be blocking it.
