I am playing with CEPH in VMs to learn but I was wondering if any of you is running CEPH across multiple nodes in your homelab. I would be curious to see your builds. I am considering small supermicro 1RU servers with 4 x xTB per servers. I would need 3 to start with to have CEPH going.

It's a bit difficult to add more nodes to my homelab, for two reasons. First reason is I'm not sure having 5 nodes would make a significant difference. Second reason is if I was working with 6 nodes, I would split 3 for ceph, and 3 for compute, and I'm back to 3 nodes.

Ceph requires 2-4 GB of RAM per OSD plus 4 GB of RAM for the base OS per data node. If you plan on running MON, MGR, RGW, or MDS on the same nodes, add approximately 4 GB of RAM for each of those daemons as well. I run 64 GB of RAM per node which is fine for my needs.
Three Node Ceph Cluster at Home – Creative Misconfiguration
https://creativemisconfiguration.wordpress.com/.../three-node-ceph-cluster
10.05.2020 · I’ve always wanted to use Ceph at home, but triple replication meant that it was out of my budget. When Ceph added Erasure Coding, it meant I could build a more cost-effective Ceph cluster. I had a working file-server, so I didn’t need to build a full-scale cluster, but I did some tests on Raspberry Pi 3B+s to see if they’d allow for a usable cluster with one OSD per Pi.

CephFS is the equivalent of datasets in ZFS. -Ceph bluestore needs whole drives. -you can mix different types and sizes of drives but not recommended. I suggest 2 pools: SSD and HDD -Ceph supports cache tiering between pools. You can make your SSD pool work as cache for your HDD pool. -Minimum size cluster is 3 storage nodes and 3 monitor nodes.
