Compound symbols In a compound unit symbol, multiplication is denoted by either a dot or a space (e.g. N•m, N m). The last form may also be written without a space, provided that special care is taken when the symbol for one of the units is the same as the symbol for a prefix, e.g. mN means millinewton, not metre newton.
A chart of chemical symbols in use about 1780 is shown in Figure 1. John Dalton, in advocating his atomic theory, recommended symbols composed of circles. Examples of Dalton's symbols for elements and compounds is shown in Figure 2, along with relative weight scale.

In order to illustrate chemical reactions and the elements and compounds involved in them, chemists use symbols and formulas. A chemical symbol is a one-or ...
Elements and Compounds An Atom. Atom - smallest unit of all matter, that is composed of 3 sub-atomic particles called protons, electrons and neutrons; Proton - the 'heavy' positively-charged particle in the nucleus of an atom; Electron - the very 'light' negatively-charged particle that orbits the nucleus of an atom; Neutron - the 'heavy' uncharged particle in the nucleus of an atom

Compound - A compound is a substance made of more than one type of atom (e.g. water H 2 O, carbon dioxide CO 2 ). Molecule - A molecule is the smallest particle of either an element or a compound. Inert or Noble Gases Inert or Noble Gases are unreactive gases. They do not corrode or react. Examples of Noble Gases are: He - Helium Ne - Neon
Chemical Compound Formulas Chemical formulae provide a way to represent any chemical substance using the symbol of the elements present in it. Provided below is a list of the chemical formulas of some common chemical compounds (along with their molecular weights).
Types of Chemistry Formulae or Chemical Formulae. A molecular formula contains the chemical symbols of the constituent elements followed by numeric subscripts.
