It specifically doesn't work when the current connection is set to "Public network". It automatically works when it's changed to "Private network". No need to disable the firewall, just set it to private.

Sep 10, 2021 · A simple test is to use an application such as telnet to attempt to create a network connection between your host, the Raspberry Pi, and the host outside of the university network. For example telnet smtp.example.com 587 to see if that works. You may be running into a university firewall setting which is blocking the use of port 587.
