I'm ready to move away from Windows. From other posts here I have narrowed down to Linux Mint or Debian (when 11 is released).

Note though that Debian has a learning curve compared to Mint. The latter tries to have everything set up out-of-the-box, whereas Debian expects you to do some things yourself, such as enabling the package lists for firmware drivers (non-free). These tasks are easy to execute, but might require some research and patience.

LMDE is based on Debian Stable, only comes in Cinnamon, and Cinnamon is basically rolling. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS (which was mostly cut from a freeze of Debian Unstable when created) with semi-anual point releases, and comes in Cinnamon/Mate/XFCE. Both use flatpak, which is how you'd have contemporary software in either case.

From the out of the box user experience I think Mint is the better choice since there are some tweaks you have to do manually in Debian. Also ...

Not much difference. Both run on Debian Stable. Mint has a bit more polish with newer version of Firefox and newer version of Cinnamon desktop.

LMDE and Debian are slower release distributions, so if you want the most recent, choose the normal Ubuntu version of Linux Mint which has Kernel 5.4 after updating with the option of 5.7 if you add the mainline ppa. 2. level 2.
