In the economic analysis of tourism, one may distinguish between tourism’s ‘economic contribution’ which refers to the direct effect of tourism and is measurable by means of the TSA, and tourism’s ‘economic impact’ which is a much broader concept encapsulating the direct, indirect and induced effects of tourism and which must be estimated by applying models.

Direct employment is generated directly from the consumption or spending of visitors and government. This involves, for example, the travel agent, the taxi driver, the receptionist and manager of an hotel, who (almost) directly deal with the visitor. Most figures that are published on tourism-related employment are based on direct employment.

As well as the directemployment discussed in Section 2.1, the travel and tourism industry also has further employment impacts. For example, in the sectors which provide goods and services to the travel and tourism sector, there will be indirectemployment sustained.
