In that case, it sounds like the customer's VPN is not set up for split DNS. With split DNS, the VPN concentrator gives your VPN client a list of DNS servers (as it currently does), and also a list of domains that are the only domains that should be used with those DNS servers; all others would use your system's default DNS. –

However resources where the records were hosted on our internal dns servers under a different name (ie publicname.company.com) did not resolve successfully. Also setting the metric only on the vpn adapter is probably working because using a value of 10 is lower than the value windows 10 sets automatically on the Ethernet adapter.

The issue started occurring today, the machine wasn't used for several days and had died due to discharge (it might have been on linux at the time), I dual boot Win10 and networking is fine there... tried a hard reset and made sure windows shutdown without quick startup.
