It has DSM 7 on it and while the hardware is far superior to my DS918+ it runs WAY slower. By an order of magnitude slower. I'm comfortable SSH'ing in and good in linux.

Is it as easy as point and click for an upgrade? No, but its not terrible difficult you just need to manually edit a file to fool it s being another version.
