This sort of shorthand is used a lot in chemistry; in organic chemistry, we not only use "Me" but also "Et" (ethyl, CH 3 CH 2 ), "Pr" (propyl, CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ), "Bu" (butyl, CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2) and a whole host of other abbreviations for common functional groups.
