The European Athletics Championships will be held in Germany for the fourth time and for the second time in Munich after 2002. The first European Athletics Championships took place in 1934 - hence the continental championships have been around much longer than the World Championships, which debuted in 1983.

A new take on sightseeing: the marathon course of the European Championships 2022 will showcase Munich from its most beautiful side. The start and finish will be at Odeonsplatz. Following the additional loop of 2.195 kilometres, the runners will take on a 10-kilometre loop four times, which will lead them past famous landmarks of the city.
