Normally I would use ~/.Xauthority, but that file doesn't exist anymore and using xauth doesn't recreate .Xauthority the file for whatever reason.

May 29, 2020 · I've had similar problems. I couldn't login to Ubuntu on the boot screen. and finally came up with a workaround script to fix X11VNC's issues while using the default GDM3 on Ubuntu 21. I wish X11VNC would fix this. Use this as a setup script to configure your X11VNC after installing x11vnc.

Note that the GNOME display manager gdm3 does not use ~/.Xauthority so this may require an application-specific answer for VNC Connect. As the manual page says, "Upon session startup, GDM sets the XAUTHORITY environment variable to a session-specific file in /var/run/gdm3.Applications and scripts that assume this file is set to ~/.Xauthority will not work.
