It merely gives permission for Kindle to do so, it does not mean it will delete anything. If you do not choose to allow your Kindle access and permissions, you will not be able to use the mail app on your Kindle, or other Google services, and you'll have to manually login to your gmail and google account via a web browser.
Turn off imap. Save it. Try logging in using your fire. It will tell you imap is disabled. Go back into gmail, turn it on. Save it. Try connecting your fire.
