Hass.io is an operating system that will take care of installing and updating Home Assistant, is managed from the Home Assistant UI, allows creating/restoring snapshots of your configuration and can easily be extended using Hass.io add-ons including Google Assistant and Let’s Encrypt.
Home Assistant is a combination of Home Assistant Core and tools which allows one to run it easily on a Raspberry Pi and other platforms without setting up an operating system first. Home Assistant is an all-in one-solution and has a management user interface that can be used from the Home Assistant frontend.
Simplified: Home Assistant is software for automating compatible hardware and software for your home. HASS.io takes that software, and pre-wraps it in a nice, handy, environment that you can easily update all the software installed on it. Makes it significantly easier to 'get going'. So this is Home Assistant, but with other stuff combined.
