The solution is to disable dnsmasq in the Networkmanager configuration file. Open /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and comment out the line: dns=dnsmasq. My NetworkManager.conf file contains the following: [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile # dns=dnsmasq [ifupdown] managed=false. 15.01.2018 · The hosts file should be working. Open a command prompt and ping the domain name to check which IP address is returned. If you followed these instructions exactly, it should be the one from your new hosts file.

Just changing the hosts file is not enough. You also need to flush your DNS cache. Open a command prompt and type: ipconfig /flushdns.

If you have a proxy configured, it may bypass the hosts file. The solution is to not use the proxy, or configure it to not do this. To check, go to your Internet Explorer -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN settings. If everything is blank and "Automatically detect settings" is checked, you aren't using a proxy.
