I use non-free installer and try put .ucode file in /firmware/ folder on USB (from here), but it not work! I also try renamed iwlwifi-8000 in iwlwifi-8260, but it also not work. Under elementary OS, to get iwlwifi working, you only have to install the linux-firmware and the linux-image-extra-virtual packages. I would just go to Software & Updates and look under Additional Drivers. If you have a proprietary wifi driver, it will most likely be listed here.

Sep 02, 2012 · If you cloned https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … rmware.git it should contain iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode however once the linux-firmware package is updated to contain it as well the update will refuse to install due to the untracked file you added. I'm trying to install Kali via USB, and was shown a screen saying I'm missing three firmware files: iwlwifi-8265-30.ucode, iwlwifi-8265-29.ucode, and iwlwifi-8265-28.ucode. As far as I know, these are necessary for the network card in my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad P51) to work.
Installation of the firmware is simply: % cp iwlwifi-7260-14.ucode /lib/firmware. You can now load the driver! So I have successively copied the driver in the proper location /lib/firmware but I don't know what is meant by TO LOAD THE DRIVER.
