tl; dr: probably reputable, but they are controversial, and a significant number of academics don't like MDPI. I used to work in publishing so this answer cuts much closer to the publisher's world than the academic one. It's also going to be very long, so I'm splitting it into sections. Size: MDPI has grown very large.
