After evaluating several options I have decided to go a for a VM based on a Ubuntu Linux OS (Lubuntu to be exact) and simply installed the available Nextcloud snap. Works fine for me since ~ 6 month. Perceived performance compared to a Nextcloud on a Raspberry 3 is a lot better.
