+1 for KVM. Having run both Proxmox and KVM on Ubuntu I would say that if you’re running Ubuntu/want to keep doing so, installing KVM and Virt-Manager is very simple and works just as well as Proxmox for basic VM type stuff (plus you can run containers in Docker on the host.)
