I would love to learn maths and physics in case I don't make it to medical school, however, given my already low 3.0 AMCAS GPA I am afraid that majoring in biophysics will keep me form being able to raise it to 3.5-3.6 range.

My recommendation would be to major in bio and minor in physics. Answer (1 of 5): Questions like this are extremely vague and broad. As such they are almost impossible to answer. I did not major in biophysics. My bachelor's degree is in biochemistry.

Biophysics is a good mix of biology, chemistry, and physics for those who are not quite satisfied with only one of those subjects. The major is quite similar to biochemistry, although more theoretical calculations and concepts will be involved…and, at Johns Hopkins at least, the major is most like an extention of what is learned in biology.

Generally, have in mind that Biophysics is essentially applied mathematics, that is, it is more mathematics and physics than biology! (At least, in my point of view). So, yes, biophysics would be a great, unique way to approach premed. However, biophysics is a large field that is not exclusively medicine related. Biomaterials and biomechanics all require understanding of biophysics. So in short, you can use biophysics as a launching point for a career in medicine, pharmaceuticals, or engineering.
