Depends. I would say that Linux is better in certain ways, but there is no harm continuing developing on W7. Many people prefer Linux because it has much better command line than W7 and that is true. However there are tools (like cygwin) that emulate Linux terminal in Windows, essentially it's like having it built in.

Using VSCode and changing the terminal settings, makes it a great editor for development. I decided to give Linux a try, since it’s been some years now that I haven’t used it.

I am a second year CS student and have used xubuntu as a VM in my first year and Mint Xfce in my current year. I have never had any problems which where specific to Linux mint. It should be a good choice :) Also I would recommend the Xfce version, but that's obviously personal preference :P
