The Village of Ruidoso is home to the Smokey Bear District of Lincoln National Forest and ranges in elevation from 5,400 to 11,580 feet. There are two wilderness areas with year-round outdoor recreation including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, hunting, skiing, and snowboarding.
Trails: We offer trails ranging in use from hiking, pack/saddle, mountain biking, motorcycle riding and ATV riding (less than 50" in width). Most side-by-sides are greater than 50" in width and exceed a weight limit, these can be enjoyed on our dirt roads.
Lincoln National Forest - Ski Apache Ski Area (Alpine) Ski Apache Ski Area (Alpine) Area Status: Open Ski Apache is a popular alpine ski facility located near Sierra Blanca. It offers downhill ski opportunities in the winter, access to the White Mountain Wilderness Area trails and also stunning views from the Lookout Vista Observation Site.
It is in the Lincoln National Forest but, Ski Apache is a Mescalero-Apache owned resort. If Ruidoso has a good winter with snow, the mountain offers skiing.

From cross country skiing to downhill developed ski areas and resorts, the Lincoln provides skiing access many months of the year. Ski Apache, a downhill ski resort, has a base elevation of 9,700 feet. Located primarily on Forest land, Ski Apache is operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe.
