Multicast over TCP/IP HOWTO: The internals.
https://tldp.org/HOWTO/Multicast-HOWTO-7.html
IGMP version 0 is specified in RFC-988 which is now obsoleted. Almost no one uses version 0 now. IGMP version 1 is described in RFC-1112 and, although it is updated by RFC-2236 (IGMP version 2) it is in wide use still. The Linux kernel implements the full IGMP version 1 and parts of version 2 requirements, but not all.

It can be completely deconfigured from the Linux kernel. Although the Linux TCP/IP implementation supports host-side multicasting, the kernel by itself is not a multicast router.
