If you are coming from Windows, you will feel more at home with Cinnamon. LMDE and Debian are slower release distributions, so if you want the most recent, choose the normal Ubuntu version of Linux Mint which has Kernel 5.4 after updating with the option of 5.7 if you add the mainline ppa. 2. level 2. Not much difference. Both run on Debian Stable. Mint has a bit more polish with newer version of Firefox and newer version of Cinnamon desktop.

Debian 8 aka Debian stable will generally have somewhat older software than Linux Mint 18. Linux Mint 18 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS which in turn imports most of its software from Debian testing or even Debian unstable. Those have newer software than Debian stable.

I know this is the Debian subreddit so opinions may be biased, but I don’t mind. I simply want to get users’ opinions on why one might be better off using Debian over Linux Mint, Ubuntu etc. Context: I’m currently running Linux Mint on a Lenovo Thinkpad X250.
