The total capacity of a RAID level 6 array is calculated similarly to RAID level 5 and 4, except that you must subtract 2 devices (instead of 1) from the device count for the extra parity storage space. Level 10. This RAID level attempts to combine the performance advantages of level 0 with the redundancy of level 1.

11.12.2013 · We will use LVM (Logical Volume Manager) later on to create the partitions we need, but for the boot partition we can not create an LVM partition, so we need to create a separate RAID 1 partition for the /boot partition. To do this, create on both hard discs a “RAID Partition”. This partition should be, as suggested, about 200MB in size.

Jun 05, 2010 · LVM Setup. That's the RAID 1 bit of the setup taken care of - so this is the point at which we get LVM to create a nice big partition out of the first two disks. But there's a problem - the pvcreate command is a little broken. We need to run the command: pvcreate /dev/md0 /dev/md1. Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty)

I am assuming you mean Hardware RAID with LVM on Top, vs. LVM and Software RAID on top of LVM. If so, I always advise to opt for hardware based RAID first. Software RAID is just that, while overhead is small, hardware RAID performance will be better 9 out of 10 times.

raid - RAIDing with LVM vs MDRAID - pros and cons? - Unix ...
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/150644
LVM-RAID is actually mdraid under the covers. It basically works by creating two logical volumes per RAID device (one for data, called "rimage"; one for metadata, called "rmeta"). It then passes those off to the existing mdraid drivers. So things like handling disk read errors, I/O load balancing, etc. should be fairly mature. That's the good news.

01.01.2008 · Having learned a bit about LVM mirroring, I thought about replacing the current RAID-1 scheme I'm using to gain some flexibility. Problem is that according to what I found on the Internet, LVM is: Slower then RAID-1, at least in reading (as only single volume being used for reading). Non-reliable on power interrupts, and requires disk cache ...
