Macromolecules. MM are relatively immobile, high molecular weight (>3500 DA) compounds that give rise to broad (short T 2) resonances in proton MR spectra of the brain. Failure to account for these macromolecular resonances will generally lead to an overestimation of the metabolite concentrations whose signals overlie the MM signals.

Macromolecules are defined here in terms of colloids rather than as large solutes. They can be considered generally as small colloids (∼1–10 nm), although it is accepted that some mineral colloids and extensively cross-linked biological debris could be considered as macromolecules whose size extends from the small colloid range into the range of conventionally defined particles.
