This is because Ubuntu is patching mutter (Gnome's compositor) to support fractional scaling on Xorg. If you feel like you want to experiment, then you could try my port:

So far I like it very much, especially fractional scaling is a must have on a small HiDPI screen. My only question is: Can I make scaling change during runtime instead of reboot?
