Skipet var byggnummer 265 ved Kværner Kleven Verft i Ulsteinvik, og kostet omkring 500 millioner kroner. MS «Nordkapp» har siden april 1996 gått i fast rotasjon i hurtigruten, bare avbrutt av cruise-oppdrag og verkstedopphold.
