Understanding IPv6 NAT-PT | INE

18.04.2008 · IPv6 NAT-PT is to be used with IPv4 to IPv6 migration scenarios and it's purpose is to provide bi-directional connectivity between IPv4 and IPv6 domains. Cisco points out that many other transition techniques are possible, and NAT-PT (Network Address Translation - Protocol Translation) should not be used when other, more "native" options exist ...

Like the IPv4 NAT, NAT-PT will do all the payload translations in process switching mode" There is a philosophical difference between NATPT and NAT64. NAT-PT is the technique for IPv4 to operate in an IPv6 dominated environment, while NAT64 is meant to make IPv6 operate in an IPv4 dominated internet.
NAT64 - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAT64
NAT64 is an IPv6 transition mechanism that facilitates communication between IPv6 and IPv4 hosts by using a form of network address translation (NAT). The NAT64 gateway is a translator between IPv4 and IPv6 protocols, for which function it needs at least one IPv4 address and an IPv6 network segment comprising a 32-bit address space. The "well-known prefix" reserved for this service is 64:ff9b::/96.

29.03.2011 · NAT-PT tried to solve too many problems, including ubiquitous access of IPv4 clients to IPv6 content. As you might imagine, it’s somewhat hard to map 128-bit address space into 32 bit addresses. NAT64 solves the workable part of NAT-PT: giving IPv6 clients access to IPv4 servers. NAT-PT has DNS ALG in the forwarding path.
