Once you've done the initial transfer it's convenient to have the Nextcloud app auto-upload your photos and videos. However viewing them on the web interface leaves something to be desired. Personally, I access them on my laptop, where I can use the built-in photo viewer to decide which pictures are best (I make a calendar of my photos every year as a gift for family and friends).

The import looks like it will work well but it seems to be importing them at low quality, for instance images on my google photos are 4 - 5Mb and they are importing into Nextcloud with at only 45 - 60kb.. One thing is for sure, things are working fine when your Nextcloud does the requests as an authenticated user because you get the photo count in the settings page. The background job used to import photos/drive is launched in a different context. This might be the source of the problem.

30.08.2021 · In your Nextcloud, simply enable the Photos app through the Apps management. The Nextcloud Photos app is only included in nextcloud v18 and higher.
