In the present paper a broad class of nonlinear partial differential equa- tions is characterized by an analogue of the mass-flow criterion discussed above. In §1 the nature of the restriction imposed by this criterion is dis- cussed and it is shown that the solution must satisfy a generalized maximum principle.
