Pine wetlands (pine flats or pine savannas) are a type of forested wetland found in sandy soils of the coastal plain states including North Carolina. Water table levels in these wetlands stay close enough to the surface of the ground to foster a variety of water-tolerating plants, including pond pine trees, shrubs, and herbs.

North Carolina's Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) enhances protection of coastal wetlands by Section 404 of the federal Clean Water Act. CAMA defines a coastal wetland as any marsh subject to regular or occasional flooding by wind or lunar tides. These marshlands may contain one or more of the 10 species discussed below.
