It also seems that GeForce Experience does not detect the drivers; whenever I use it, it tells me that no drivers are found, and after using it to update the drivers the same thing happens. It seems that windows occasionally downloads version 388.13 automatically when it detects that no driver is present (after an attempt at uninstalling it).

There's really no reason to update unless you are having issues in which a newer version specifically lists as "fixed".
