Apr 28, 2015 · On unraid it was a bit of a hack to get tvheadend to run on it. Also unraid uses riserfs (or did at the time) so you would need a copy of Ubuntu 12.04 if you wanted to read the disks. Where as my raid 5 install could be moved to my ubuntu machine if needed and it would just work.

02.05.2015 · But let's clarify something first: unRAID is not RAID, it's parity. Second, neither OMV nor unRAID use the "raid card on the motherboard" OOTB. IMO, it all depends on your requirements, which you haven't stated. Therfore, I would suggest you to try out OMV since it is free, setup snapRAID and some other plugins and see how you like it.

Unraid uses better technology under the hood and of course they have more budget to allocate in to the development of the product. On the other hand, OMV is a very simple system which just works. Personally, im running OMV because my NAS server is underpowered and also, because OMV is based on debian, it easier to use it for other purposes too. 5

Sep 11, 2018 · OMV is short for Openmediavault Nas4free and FreeNAS are very similar, almost interchangeable in some cases. Nas4free and FreeNas both use ZFS exclusively. OMV can use EXT4, XFS, BTRFS, ZFS. Unraid is XFS and BTRFS. Unraid has the benefit of having support, but you do have to pay for it. FreeNas/Nas4Free has the best ZFS support.

OMV is a close 2nd to unRAID (its also free, unRAID is paid) but I find I prefer unRAID and it just works. unRAID with 6.9 also looks to have GPU drivers added so you can easily use hardware transcoding with Emby/Plex.
