28.03.2017 · DD-WRT should support band steering. afaik this concept allows you put the same ssid on the g and a radios. When a client associates to the ssid the response from the g radio is delayed. The result is a client with both a and g radios connect on the 5ghz band and client that are just 2.4ghz connect on that band.

01.01.2020 · I'm using the Xiaomi Wifi 3G Router with the latest OpenWRT 18.06.1. I'd like to realize some kind of Band Steering and let clients switch from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz and vice versa. Actually, putting both SSIDs identically does not really work great: Getting out of reach of the 5Ghz network lets devices connect to 2.4Ghz, but they remain there and don't switch back (even hours later) to …

That there is currently no support for band steering in dd-wrt. They do mention that you can somewhat mimic band steering by reducing the beacon interval on your 2.4 Ghz network. They mention 5Ghz 100ms and 2.4Ghz 200ms, but I might even reduce it to 300ms to ensure that a beacon frame will received on the 5Ghz channel before on the 2.4Ghz channel.

06.10.2021 · If you only have one network on your router, chances are that it is actually broadcasting on both the 2.4GHz (good for long range) and 5GHz (best for short range) bands and using a protocol called “band steering” to let your device switch automatically.

Oct 06, 2021 · The problem with band steering. If the technology was perfect, it would be an easy choice: turn on 2.4GHz and 5GHz; give them the same SSID, password, and encryption settings; and your device will automatically pick the 5GHz network when you’re close to the router and switch to 2.4 when 5 gets weak. In practice, band steering is a bit unreliable.
