14.03.2021 · That's because "software flow offloading" means that the traffic is bypassing some of the advanced firewall features used by QoS and SQM to prioritize traffic. It's meant to provide an "alternative" to the "hardware accelerated NAT" features offered in stock firmware that can't usually be done in OpenWrt.

I have software flow offloading enabled on 19.07.2 on a WRT1200AC and my uplink is 100 Mb/s. If I set SQM to 30000, my speed drops to less than 30 Mb/s. It also states in the GUI that SQM is not fully compatible with flow offloading.

Dec 27, 2021 · OpenWRT Wiki does not contain anything about this new feature which got introduced in 19.03 Firmware. I just found that the term is an OpenWRT's alias for proprietary technologies doing the same thing, about which I found no information whatsoever so this research didn't bring me any further apparently.

29.10.2018 · Hardware offloading is not upstream yet because there is no driver using it yet. In OpenWRT, the flow offloading is extended to support bridges, VLANs and PPPoE. So finally there is something upstream (in Linux and in OpenWRT). In the future, hopefully more can go into the mainline. Another future step is to get QoS in flow offloading.

Flow Offloading is faster - but will SQM still manage bandwidth better? I've seen and read a bunch of topics on software/hardware flow offloading, and the current state of SQM when that's enabled, but I'm still quite a newbie at fully understanding all of the network tools and routing information.
