simple past tense – n. the basic form of the past tense in English. It is used to describe events that finished at a specific time in the past.

The past simple and the present perfect refer to two different tenses. As their names suggest, one refers to the past and the other to the present. We use the simple past to refer to an event/action that has already finished or happened, and the time is usually certain and specified. It always refers to finished time.

The present perfect is formed from the present tense of the verb have and the past participle of a verb. We use the present perfect: for something that started in the past and continues in the present: They've been married for nearly fifty years. She has lived in Liverpool all her life.

We use the present perfect to talk about time up to now, that is, events that took place in the past but which connect with the present.
