I have a single Proxmox setup, and want to add a second box as a 'backup/nas'. Can someone confirm, or have a different suggestion for me? This is what I'm planning on doing with the new (smaller) server: Install Proxmox on it. VM with TrueNAS. VM with Proxmox Backup Server. I want to use TrueNAS for basic backups across my house.
I currently run a 3 node Proxmox VE cluster and am looking to add a Proxmox Backup server for obvious reasons. My cluster consists of a Dell R720 LFF 8 Bay and dual Dell R730 8 Bay SFF and I'm hoping to add a lower power 1-2U server as a Proxmox backup/storage server with at least 8bay 3.5 HDD of at least 8-16TB total space for ZFS.
The proxmox backup server makes backups faster and deduplicates data so you can keep more backups in less space. I installed it yesterday for the first time and it was super easy to use. Long term this seems like this will be the best solution for proxmox backups. I can't wait to see this product leave beta.
Proxmox VE is a complete, open-source server management platform for enterprise virtualization. It tightly integrates the KVM hypervisor and Linux Containers (LXC), software-defined storage and networking functionality, on a single platform. With the integrated web-based user interface you can manage VMs and containers, high availability for ...
So how it works. You add a datastore on the proxmox backup server. You then add the PBS as storage on your Proxmox VE, you need to select storage type: PBS. Then you can create a new backup job, or edit a existing one to the new target. You need to update your Proxmox VE first, if you havent done that recently.

Proxmox on its own does full backups, meaning if I keep 10 backups of my 20GB server that's 200GBs. I've had my 7TB external drive at almost full for a while now because of this. PBS on the other hand has deduplication, meaning there's barely any extra storage if nothing has changed. My 10 backups of the same server are now 21-ish GB instead of ...
Got PBS up and running (version 1.0) backing up VMs on a separate physical server. It's separate from the 3-node Proxmox (version 6.3) Ceph cluster. The docs aren't clear how to backup the nodes. According to PBS docs webpage it backups physical hosts. Is there a tutorial on how to backup nodes? Thanks for the replies.
