You can even save your virtual disks and containers on your NAS and run your VM from it. There are two protocols you can use to add Synology to Proxmox for additional storage: SMB or CIFS and NFS.

Proxmox can backup over multiple protocols. I personally backup to a NFS share on my Synology NAS and it works excellent. In short to backup: Choose your protocol and set it up on FreeNAS Add the created share into Proxmox from the storage tab
