The directory layout and the file naming conventions are the same. The main advantage is that you can directly configure the NFS server properties, so the backend can mount the share automatically. There is no need to modify /etc/fstab.

All of my VMs were stored on one of two RAID volumes. They were either on /dev/sdb or /dev/sda. After reinstalling, the disks are listed in the disks and the LVM groups I had setup show as well.
