Slow write performance to a NFS share | TrueNAS Community

Aug 18, 2017 · See post #6 for an updated status. Hello, I have a VM running on my freenas box. The purpose of the VM is to run a burp backup server. Inside the VM, I mounted my dataset with a SMB share hosted by the same NAS. The burp server stores the backup on this mount. When a client is backuping, I...

05.06.2021 · May 28, 2021. #2. ZFS performance can be improved be tweaking some settings. I always set these when using both Proxmox and TrueNAS Core, or any other ZFS setup. You should stripe mirrors for the best IO, RAIDZ2 is not exactly fast, and I personally don't use it for pools larger than 10 disks.
Increase performance of Proxmox Backups to NFS Targets
https://www.dev-eth0.de/2017/01/14/proxmox-nfs-backups
14.01.2017 · While the NFS share usually performs with ~70MB/s, the proxmox backup speed was only around 2MB/s. Backups to the local SSD were finished with ~100MB/s without compression and ~15MB/s with gzip, so it should not be a CPU issue. There are some threads in the Proxmox Forum about the influence of NFS mount-options and other stuff but in the end ...

Dec 30, 2015 · I found the performance to be poor as I was trying to restore a back-up to an NFS share on my WD Ex2 NAS. In the meantime I found that NFS is not well suited for hosting a file used as a raw device, though it is technically feasible. Instead I will configure an iSCSI target on my NAS and use it as a LVM physical volume.

One way to determine whether more NFS threads helps performance is to check the data in /proc/net/rpc/nfs for the load on the NFS daemons. The output line that starts with th lists the number of threads, and the last 10 numbers are a histogram of the number of seconds the first 10% of threads were busy, the second 10%, and so on.

So I have TrueNAS running under Proxmox because I much prefer Proxmox as a virtualization platform, but TrueNAS is all around better as a NAS. I know it would be optimal to have TrueNAS on dedicated hardware, but I can't make that happen. To make things even worse, I am going to need to mount this nfs share for some of my LXC containers.
