Calling empty_cache() releases all unused cached memory from PyTorch so that those can be used by other GPU applications. However, the occupied GPU memory by tensors will not be freed so it can not increase the amount of GPU memory available for PyTorch. For more advanced users, we offer more comprehensive memory benchmarking via memory_stats().

May 19, 2020 · You won’t avoid the max. memory usage by removing the cache. As explained before, torch.cuda.empy_cache() will only release the cache, so that PyTorch will have to reallocate the necessary memory and might slow down your code The memory usage will be the same, i.e. if your training has a peak memory usage of 12GB, it will stay at this value.

Mar 07, 2018 · torch.cuda.empty_cache()(EDITED: fixed function name) will release all the GPU memory cache that can be freed. If after calling it, you still have some memory that is used, that means that you have a python variable (either torch Tensor or torch Variable) that reference it, and so it cannot be safely released as you can still access it.
