Now boots from SSD without SD card inserted and working stable for 2 days. There was a 2 problems - this small portable ssd is power hungry- 0.9A, and slow to start.

I see the "power" indicator on the SATA/USB connector light up for 2 seconds during the check cycle of the R.pi, but it turns off immediately after and doesn't boot leaving me with a black screen. Wed May 23, 2018 2:11 pm. as pointed out by the gurus here, better start with a clean install of latest Raspbian Stretch image to mSATA SSD, for a new fresh installation so that it will boot from mSATA, that is if you have not populated your current installation with your favorite apps and settings.

Safely remove SD Card from computer, put it back in your Raspberry Pi 3b and attach power cable. Let it boot. It should boot as normal. Now your Raspberry Pi 3 is capable to boot from USB.

29.07.2018 · If this is not the issue, that it could be that your SSD needs more time to boot. While this is unlikely, because SSD are fast, that could be it.
