Every Linux distros are great programming environments. The significant parameter here is that you're a novice, so I would recommand Ubuntu or Fedora, which are very user friendly. Linux distributions are mainly distinguished by which package manager they use.

Just go with a rolling release distro. If you choose an versioned distro you will be stuck with outdated dependencies (older than 6 months, sometimes more than a year) most of the time.
