The CPU might be able to drop exceeding multicast traffic but that could also include IGMP membership reports and IGMP group leave messages. The issue above is common with cheap switches that support IGMP snooping. It might work with low bandwidth multicast traffic but that’s about it. IGMP snooping with L3 aware ASICs

Firstly, you need to enable IGMP Snooping. On the core switch (if you have one according the above diagram), IGMP Snooping can be disabled. On the edge switches, you need to enable IGMP Snooping. An example of this setting on a Cisco SG300-52 model switch is shown below.

IGMP Snooping proxy is an enhanced function. When enabled, the IGMP Snooping switch starts working as IGMP Snooping does, and then, when the switch retrieves an IGMP query from a router, it promptly responds with a report according to its status. When disabled, the IGMP queries in VLAN and the reports from hosts are flooded.

IGMP snooping is the process of listening to Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) network traffic. The feature allows a network switch to listen in on the IGMP conversation between hosts and routers. By listening to these conversations the switch maintains a map of which links need which IP multicast streams.

As far as I understand it there’s two parts to IGMP snooping 1) the snooping which does the filtering and 2) the querier/mrouter which send out igmp reports that all the multicast listeners respond to which keeps the switch from filtering the stream to that port. No reports then nothing for snooping to snoop and it eventually filters everything.

If a network does not enable IGMP snooping, attackers could exploit this fact in a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. By sending unnecessary multicast traffic that the network switches then forward across the network, an attacker can tie up network bandwidth and processing power.
